International Society for Digital Earth

The International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) was proposed together by the experts and scholars from more than 10 countries, such as China, Canada, USA, Japan, Russia and Czech Republic etc. Inaugurated in May 2006, the ISDE is a non-political, non-governmental and not-for-profit international organization initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with the collaboration of institutes and related scholars throughout the world. The ISDE secretariat is hosted by the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Lu Yongxiang, the vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and the President of CAS, serves as the founding president of the ISDE.

Digital Earth Vision

Digital Earth is characterized as a virtual representation of the planet, encompassing all its systems and forms, including human societies, manifested as a multi-dimensional, multi-scale, multi-temporal, and multi-layer information facility. The Digital Earth vision incorporates a digitally-formatted Earth, as a functionally interfacing metaphor, whereby a corresponding virtual body of knowledge of the real Earth and its digital representation for understanding the Earth and relevant phenomena is accessible to all citizens of the planet via the internet.

ISDE Aims

The purpose of ISDE is to promote international cooperation of the Digital Earth vision, and enable Digital Earth technologies to play key roles in, inter alia, economic and socially-sustainable development, to promote information technology and to reduce digital gap.

International Society for Digital Earth will play key role in different aspects of using natural resources, optimizing environment, protecting cultural heritage, improving disaster mitigation ability , global change study, natural resource conservation and improvement of living standards.

ISDE Background and Development

The "Digital Earth" concept was initially proposed by the former U.S. vice-president Mr. Al Gore in 1998, which was then received tremendous responses from many countries. More than 500 delegates from 27 countries attended the First International Symposium on Digital Earth (also abbreviated as ISDE) in Beijng in 1999. The former Vice Premier of China, Mr. Li Lanqing delivered a speech at the 1st ISDE. The Beijing Declaration on Digital Earth was announced. In 2000, the International Steering Committee for the ISDE was formally established in Beijing. with Prof. Lu Yongxiang and Prof. Guo Huadong as President and Secretary General respectively. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th ISDE were held in Canada (2001), Czech Republic (2003) and Japan (2005) respectively. The International Society for Digital Earth was officially inaugurated in May of 2006. The series of ISDE Executive Committee meetings have been held and the ISDE bylaws have been approved. The Digital Earth Summit was convened in New Zealand in August of 2006. The 5th ISDE was held in 2007 in the U.S. In March of 2008, an International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE) was published by jointly by the International Society for Digital Earth and Taylor & Francis Group, one of the leading publishers in the world. The Digital Earth Summit on Geoinformatics: Tools for Global Change Research will be held in November of 2008 in Potsdam of Germany. The 6th ISDE6 will be held in September of 2009 in Beijing, and the celebration will be made to memorize the release of Beijing Declaration and the 10th anniversary of the International Symposium.

International Journal of Digital Earth

International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE) is the official Journal of International Society for Digital Earth and covers Digital Earth theories, technologies and applications etc. It focuses on knowledge-based solutions to build and advance applications to improve human conditions, protect ecological services and support future sustainable development for environmental, social, and economic conditions.

IJDE is published by Taylor & Francis, and the inaugural issue of IJDE has been released in the March of 2008. This exciting new journal will be accessible through the online platform, informaworld platform (website: http://www.informaworld.com/ijde). This includes such benefits as HTML versions of articles, forward citation linking and online publication of articles ahead of the print issue. The Manuscript CentralÔ online submission and review system for the journal has been launched to further speed the peer review process and maximize outreach to international authors.
